Gardens Live Stream Talks Program

On Saturday 21 August as part of National Science Week, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria will host a free live stream talks program that explores climate science projects underway within Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne.

Alongside scientists and other organisations across Victoria, the organisation will explore the theme: ACCLIMATISE: Science of Sustainability and Action as part of National Science Week, which runs between 14 – 22 August.

“This year, we look forward to sharing our climate change expertise through a variety of lenses and disciplines,” says Tim Entwisle, Director and Chief Executive. “We hope that our program inspires people to act for our planet.”

This talks program, called Future Landscapes will feature live virtual presentations by Gardens experts and will allow the audience to interact online and ask questions.

Topics discussed include Gardens’ climate change initiatives, such as the Climate Change Alliance of Botanic Gardens, which brings together the world’s botanic gardens to take action on climate change, and its Landscape Succession Strategy, which identifies plants that will survive in a future warmer climate.

And, special guest, author Sophie Cunningham, will discuss botanic gardens, climate change and the importance of fungi alongside Gardens experts Clare Hart, Manager Horticulture, and Charlie Carroll, Manager Arboriculture, in The Botanic Garden that Thought it Could Change the World and in The Future of Fungi with the Gardens Principal Mycologist, Tom May.

These events are part of the Inspiring Victoria ACCLIMATISE: Science of Sustainability and Action program for National Science Week.

1 pm – 2 pm Future Landscapes: A talk entitled “The Gardens that could change the world” by Charlie Carroll, Manager Arboriculture and Clare Hart, Manager Horticulture, in conversation with author Sophie Cunningham.

Topics include RBGV’s Landscape Succession Strategy and the Climate Change Alliance of Botanic Gardens.

3pm – 4 pm - Future Landscapes: “Fungi are the Future” Tom May, Principal Research Scientist, Mycology, in conversation with author Sophie Cunningham.
