The Lord Howe Island Stick Insect had disappeared from the island after rats arrived in 1918 and was only known from dried museum specimens. In 1964, rock climbers sighted a dead one on the rugged outcrop Ball’s Pyramid 25 km off Lord Howe. This is the story of what happened next and how the species was brought back from the brink of extinction.
This event features the documentary ‘Stuck on a Rock’ by Asher Flatt, and discussion with Paul Flemons, Australian Museum and Rohan Cleave, Melbourne Zoo about the exciting challenges and breakthroughs to conserve this unique species.
Speakers:
Paul Flemons, Manager of Digital Collections and Citizen Science, Australian Museum
Rohan Cleave, Keeper - Reptiles, Invertebrates & Education, Melbourne Zoo
